April 17, 2011 -
Friday afternoon Ryan and I headed out to La Jolla for the expo, to pick up my shirt, bib and timing chip. What a lame expo it was. Seriously 5 booths and they gave us lousy cotton t-shirts. Kinda bummed on that but oh well. We got to go out to eat a nice carbo loading lunch at lotsa pasta. It was nice just being able to visit and not doing 6 other things at once to make the kids happy.
The next morning I was up exactly one minute before the alarm went off at 4:30. Got my gear on, my bib attached and as soon as my dad got there to watch the kids we were out the door. This time I was doing the race alone :/ My mom did not sign up for this one but did promise to meet me at the 6 mile mark and get me through the final half. Like I said before I was in much better shape this time and gave myself a goal of 2:10. That would take about 12 minutes of my carlsbad time. I also had started working
vitalyte Tri Phase endurance fuel into my workout routines. I am a firm believer in this product and its helped me stay healthy and be able to achieve my peak performance everytime.
Mile 1- 9:44
I promised myself I would not go out too fast this time. When I first started I felt relaxed but my pace was still fast. I just held back a little and was at a perfect pace when I hit the mile marker.
Mile 2- 10:00
Settling into my pace. I wanted to stay under 10:15 the whole race. Although with the hill in mind I was sure I would lose quite a few minutes going up that.
Mile 3- 10:15
Ryan and my mom were at the top of the hill, unfortunately the only time I got to see him. Since it was a point to point course.
Mile 4- 10:15
feeling really good. Heading into torrey pines hill. took a
GU roctaine and that gave me the extra energy I needed to fight the hill.
Mile 5- 12:21
Did I mention how freaking steep this hill is? a 420' incline in a little less than a mile long. I did it though so concurring that beast is a prize in itself!
Mile 6- 10:56
So that hill really KILLS your pace. But I knew that its mostly pretty flat with a nice downhill into la jolla shores. Just happy to have reached the top. Im a little out of breath but looking forward to seeing Mom to get me my second wind.
Mile 7- 9:59
I ran into Mom and she jumped in right about 6.5 miles. I cant believe she found me in the mass of people. Thank god I wore a bright pink shirt. Very happy to see her.
Mile 8- 9:49
I liked my pace right here. I grabbed another GU and tried to hang on.
Mile 9- 10:08
I think I caught myself jogging here! had to kick myself in gear. The course was really beautiful and I was looking around and maybe talking too much.
Mile 10- 10:08
Still felt great at this point. I remember smacking the 10 mile marker and cheering because we were almost done. This went by really fast.
Mile 11- 9:36
Really steep downhill into the shores. It brought down your heartrate but it was actually really hard to control your balance here. Cars were coming up the other side of the windy road so that was really dangerous.
Mile 12- 11:02
Damnit! another hill right here at the end. Why are they doing this to me!!! It was about a mile long not as steep but it was a killer to throw at you during the last mile. I hunkered down and my mom had me counting cones to the top to get my mind off it.
Mile 13- 9:14
This is it racing into the finish to the cove. Once we got to the top they kicked my mom off the course since she was not wearing a bib. I sprinted in trying not to eat it on that downhill cobblestone street.
Mile 0.1- 1:01
finished strong and happy with my time. I was 2 minutes off my goal but its defiantly within reach at the
AFC in august.
